An "iPhone" tablet?

There's been a lot of speculation about an Apple "tablet" computer over the years, and Andy Ihnatko in particular has been ruminating about such a thing coming in an "iPhone plus" form factor.

Here's the starkest hint yet that such a device may be coming. Still a rumor, but there's a feeling of legitimacy with this one.

You doubted this rumor when it came out - might hold more water now.

I still doubt that rumor. I do not think they're going to release a thicker iPhone that's still the traditional iPhone form factor. If they release something thicker, it's going to be a different product, like the tablet.

According to that rumor, the only 3G iPhone will be the "thicker" model, and the current iPhone will remain EDGE-only. Doubt it- they won't release 3G only in a model that's bigger than the current one- the mainstream iPhone, which will be same size as the current iPhone or slightly slimmer, will be 3G as well.

The low end part of that rumor sounds feasible, though. Wouldn't be surprised if the low end iPhone also does 3G, however. Occasionally Apple lifts up its entire product line by including features for everyone that other companies reserve only for high-end models (such as iSight cameras and AirPort, back in the day).

Of course, who the hell am I to say?
