Garden State

Interesting article on Zach Braff- not sure if I agree, but some good points are raised.

But this is a classic:

Thai Coup

Awesome quote from an NYT article:

"As for students, the junta encouraged them to participate in the process of rebuilding Thai democracy. 'Any of you who has an idea or any opinion, please send your ideas or suggestions to the army,' a spokesperson said in one of the televised statements."

When will the MacBook Pro move beyond the Core Duo?

Intel's Merom (Core 2 Duo) processor has been out for a while now, and is the logical upgrade for the Core Duo processors used in the current generation of MacBook Pros. It would make perfect sense for Apple to update the MacBook Pro any day now with Core 2 Duo processors.

But this report from Apple Insider mentions Intel's quad-core version of the Core 2 processor- codenamed Kentsfield and referred to as the Core 2 Extreme- which is due out next month in a desktop version, and then early next year in a more laptop-friendly Core 2 Quadro configuration.

Perhaps Apple is going to bypass the Core 2 Duo in the MacBook Pro and jump straight to the Core 2 Quadro? I wouldn't think they'd want to lag behind everyone else in the interim, but now that we know that a quad-core processor will be ready within months, the prospect of the Core 2 Duo in the MacBook Pro is less exciting than it was before.

I'm seriously considering replacing my 1.25GHz PowerBook G4 with the next-gen MacBook Pro (thought to be based on the Core 2 Duo), but now I'm wondering if I should delay my purchase until the quad-core processors are ready.

We shall see.

Should President George W. Bush receive a pardon from Senate...?

News about this is scarce at best...a potential bill planned to be heard in Senate that would pardon George W. Bush for illegal wire tapping.

Goodbye accountability and freedom in the United States...

Very cool Apple patent breakdown and The Next Big Thing

Here.

If all of the speculation here were to turn into an actual product, we'd have a handheld device that would function as a cell phone, media player, PDA, and ultra-portable computer... and it would have a seamless, context sensitive interface that would automatically morph from function to function, with various types of user input (including touch screen, touch sensitive surfaces, and even moving the device itself via shaking, etc.).

Such a device would truly be "the next big thing" from Apple- a product that fulfills the expectations the company has put in place ever since exploding into the mainstream, high-tech gadget arena with the iPod 5 years ago.

Over the past 5 years, Apple has evolved the iPod, enhanced its computers and operating system, created a legal digital ecosystem for content that runs on their media platform (via the iTunes Music Store), and has grabbed the high-tech spotlight.

And yet, the next "iPod"- a groundbreaking device that would shake things up the way the iPod did 5 years ago- has yet to emerge from Apple.

I don't think we'll see something of this scale just yet. This Tuesday, it seems like Apple's prepared to announce movie distribution via the iTunes Music Store (which may be renamed), will almost certainly reveal some new iPods (how revolutionary they will be remains to be seen), might possibly introduce something akin to a video-capable AirPort Express, and of course, possibly, "one more thing".

I think we'll see some interesting new stuff that revolves around buying and watching media, but I don't think we'll see The Next Big Thing on Tuesday. Every time one of these events comes around, speculation goes through the roof, but until (and unless) Apple pulls another "iPod" out of its hat, it's likely that speculation based around patent applications will lead to more revolutionary concepts than Apple actually unveils.
