When will the MacBook Pro move beyond the Core Duo?

Intel's Merom (Core 2 Duo) processor has been out for a while now, and is the logical upgrade for the Core Duo processors used in the current generation of MacBook Pros. It would make perfect sense for Apple to update the MacBook Pro any day now with Core 2 Duo processors.

But this report from Apple Insider mentions Intel's quad-core version of the Core 2 processor- codenamed Kentsfield and referred to as the Core 2 Extreme- which is due out next month in a desktop version, and then early next year in a more laptop-friendly Core 2 Quadro configuration.

Perhaps Apple is going to bypass the Core 2 Duo in the MacBook Pro and jump straight to the Core 2 Quadro? I wouldn't think they'd want to lag behind everyone else in the interim, but now that we know that a quad-core processor will be ready within months, the prospect of the Core 2 Duo in the MacBook Pro is less exciting than it was before.

I'm seriously considering replacing my 1.25GHz PowerBook G4 with the next-gen MacBook Pro (thought to be based on the Core 2 Duo), but now I'm wondering if I should delay my purchase until the quad-core processors are ready.

We shall see.
